Introduction
The management of quality is a very significant factor to the success of any business, whether big or small. The production of quality products is instrumental in improving the reputation of the company as well as enhancing customer satisfaction. That notwithstanding, quality products also reduce the cost incurred by an organization in replacing defective products in addition to maintaining the loyalty of the customers. A company can build a reputation for quality by producing commodities that meet the set quality standards. The essay will discuss some quality issues concerning the Coca-Cola Company, China.
Background of the company
The Coca-Cola Company is a multinational beverage corporation of the United States of America, and a marketer, retailer, and manufacturer of non-alcoholic syrups and beverage concentrate. Many people recognize it for its first product Coca-Cola that John Stith Pemberton invented in Georgia in 1886. Today, the company operates a franchised distribution system wherein it produces the concentrate of syrup that it sells to the various bottlers located throughout the world holding exclusive territories. The company offers over 350 brands of its products in more than 200 countries. One of the major growth markets for the Coca-Cola Company is China accounting for approximately seven percent of the company’s global volume.
Rationale for choosing the company
China represents one of the fasted growing economies in the world today, and many large international companies from developed nations are running to establish themselves in the country. Among these enterprises is Coca-Cola and its settlement in the country have not been easy. The Central Government of China has in the recent years responded to many scandals relating to food quality with many criminal fines and penalties, new standards, and enhanced enforcement efforts. The Coca-Cola Company has dominated the Chinese media for product quality related issues (Astley, 2012). The company has been under pressure from the local authorities and regulators as well as its product customers who have now been very cautious in buying more of the firm’s products.
Quality issue
The Coca-Cola Company in China has been facing problems concerning the quality of its products. In early 2011, the company’s Minute Maid milk drink was said to have caused the death of a ten-year-old kid and poisoning other three children in China. What followed was the product being pulled from supermarket shelves and the jittery Chinese spread the news of the poisonous food on social media. Reports from the state media claimed the presence of pesticide from the in the strawberry-flavored milk container that the deceased child took. The company had a rough time in defending itself against such allegations which put the company’s name on the line.
