Introduction
While some challenges in an organization may be solved through reward systems and sociotechnical systems, others may be solved through the distribution of authority as well as setting a stage that allows for the exercise of power. Organizational power is sought to control conflicts and determine the future of every department of an organization leading to holistic success. Therefore, power can be viewed as a management resource. Four of the positions of organizational power are discussed below and subsequently related to the power and leadership scenario.
Legitimate Power
Legitimate power implies the formal power legally granted to the manager under contract by the organization’s authorities. It is assigned to the manager through the verbal or written contract. While both absence and excess of formal power are disadvantageous to an organization’s success, a delicate balance must be achieved that is quite challenging to attain with preciseness, hence rendering conflict unavoidable. However, for success in an organization to be attained through formal power, the management must reach a maximum level of thought, intuitive ability, and foresight (Roe, 2020)
