Discipline
The theme of discipline accurately describes who I am in real life. I am fond of setting timelines and working diligently to meet them without fail. Self-discipline is an essential trait of who I am since it helps me to feel in control, sharpen my decision-making skills, and lead by example. It is imperative to lead by example and show others in the organization or team the essence of meeting deadlines and being predictable to avoid unpleasant surprises. I am particularly averse to surprises since the majority of time they lead to bitter experiences and sometimes arguments that could have been avoided with prior planning. Moreover, I am a results-oriented individual who is impatient with errors due to my orientation for details. I believe that with careful planning and attention to details, every person is capable of producing excellent results and eliminating the usually costly errors that occur in life. For instance, in my current organization, there is this complex project we were working on together with my team members. The client was demanding and the instructions needed to be implemented fully. I rallied my team members to breakdown the complex project into specific short-term plans that eventually helped us to successfully complete the entire project. The manager appreciated my role in leading the team to deliver such a complex task. On another occasion, when I was working in the sales department of my current organization, I noticed that my colleague had omitted a zero in a certain client’s invoice. Immediately I pointed out the error to him and corrected it. If I had not noticed the error, the company would have potentially lost over $100,000. This shows how my detail orientation is useful in real life situation. What these results indicate about my personal leadership is that I am always in control of the situation since I have mastered emotional intelligence, time management, thoughts building, and self-awareness skills. These skills are essential in ensuring that I achieve results despite the many life challenges that occur on daily basis. Moreover, these results should not be misconstrued to mean that I am an undemocratic leader. I subscribe to the democratic leadership style but at the same time I need to be in control of the situation to become an effective leader.
