High employee turnover from the public to private sectors is a severe challenge for human resource managers. Despite the prevalence, literature is scarce on the differences between the two sectors that account for the problem (Qaisi, 2015, p.2). Therefore, it is essential to assess the differences between the public nonprofit and the private sectors and establish the reasons for the shifts.
Researchers present several factors as causes for the high turnover. They can be classified into three main categories: the individual’s behavior, the work environment, and the availability of alternative opportunities (Qaisi, 2015). All decisions that employees make are premised on the three factors. A worker who prefers staying in one profession or workplace for a long time will be unlikely to shift from the public to the private sector. Similarly, employees are also less likely to leave a public company with a conducive work environment. Therefore, they might choose to stay in the public sector if favorable for their operations and provide them with excellent career growth opportunities.
Conversely, employees may choose to switch sectors based on specific reasons that are also determined by the same factors. An employee who rarely settles in one profession will shift to another sector without a compelling reason. A harsh working conditions, including the unfavorable physical environment, lack of amenities, high-stress levels, low degree of comfort, questionable safety, and uncleanliness, will drive employees away from one sector towards another (Davis 2018). Employees may also switch sectors when they identify opportunities for career progression. Private sectors tend to recruit the best workers and take them for further training. Employees prefer such chances and will readily shift upon availability.
Therefore, high employee turnover from the public to the private sector depends on several factors. Managers need to understand them and establish ways to curb the transfers. Taking appropriate measures will save the public companies fr
