RIM Internal Communication
It is a critical moment for the company and specifically for the CEOs. It is going through severe pressure from dwindling market share, failed product attempts, and a sinking stock price. The co-CEOs Balsillie and Lazaridis need to pick the most appropriate medium to communicate with the employees concerning the letter. The right communication channel should ensure that the employees remain engaged, productive, and aligned with the organization's goals. From the contents of the letter, it seems the employees at RI feel more isolated and disconnected from the management now than ever before. The anonymous senior-level employee indicates that the letter reflects the feeling of a considerable percentage of the company employees.
Additionally, the employee also indicates that the company has employees with great ideas for the company's future. Still, unfortunately, the organization's culture does not allow them to speak without worrying about their careers freely. Therefore it is clear that there are employees who still wish the best for the company and have ideas that may aid the development and innovation efforts of the company. The selected medium of communication needs to incorporate the issues faced by the employees that deter them from freely interacting with the management and illustrate the co-CEOs willingness to transform the current business approach to be more inclusive of the employees' ideas and create a better work environment for them.
For a start, face-to-face communication will be a priority in handling this case. Although electronic means of communication are taking over communications at the workplace, communication between the management and an organization's employees is crucial. Face-to-face communication is more personal and will bring the CEOs closer to the employees. At this time, the employees seem to feel a bit alienated from the management. A human touch to the communication will help release the tension and invite the other employees to present their respective views concerning the issue raised in the letter. It is also a way to show that the management is concerned about the employees' grievances and is willing to counter each in a productive manner that will ensure that both the management and the employees get the best out of the solution they will come up with.
In addition to face-to-face communication, there is a need to have more personalized communication between the management and each of the organization's employees. In a face-to-face meeting, generalization may be less appealing to some employees. At the same time, others may not be physically available for the meeting, and others may not be able to speak up during the meeting. To ensure that all the employees get acquainted with the management's concerns regarding the issues raised in the letter, a personalized email from the management addressed to each employee is essential. Additionally, allow for responses from each employee and assure them that the responses will not have any dire consequences on their careers, as indicated in the letter. The employees should be convinced that their responses are critical to the changes that ought to be implemented to transform the organization's work environment and culture. The employees for all levels in the organization are the audience for this internal communication. They thus should each receive an email and, if possible, attend the prior face-to-face meeting with the CEOs.
The message in this communication will focus on the change management principle of understanding the change (Shelygov, Sharonin & Todorova, 2019). The issues illustrated by the senior-level employee entail the employees' concerns about how the CEOs are handling operations management in the company that may be detrimental to the business. The employees' address to the management seeks to call out for changes that will enhance how the business deals with the current changes in the market environment. Additionally, concerns about employee accountability and the management's interaction with the employees may be dragging the business down. Therefore Balsillie and Lazaridis should ensure that they understand the need for change in the organization to better its performance amid the stiff competition faced by other players in the industry.
Message
I will begin by appreciating your dedication to the organization, as it has been imperative for the company's growth. Additionally, every idea shared and every opportunity you seize is a step towards attaining the heights of the company goals. As the management, we appreciate the efforts of each of you in your respective positions to ensure that the organization serves the customers most efficiently. In this regard, we intend to implement changes to ensure that we have the inclusivity of each of you and the management in enhancing RIM's performance in the market. Thanks for the extra miles added to the company.
The change implemented in the organization will ensure that the employees get a better working environment. At the same time, also the operations in the business get transformed to accommodate the change in the market. That is, employees need an environment that allows them to explore their respective potentials and develop their careers. For instance, the letter calls for the management to invest in developers. In this case, the developers in the company will have an opportunity to grow their careers. Additionally, other employees with ideas on ways the company can accommodate changes to the daily operation in the company will get better job satisfaction as they get an opportunity
