There are many styles that can be used in management. The most common management styles include authoritative, consultative, democratic, laissez-faire, persuasive, transformational and collaborative. A majority of managers use features from different styles in their management (Efere, 2003). This means that my management style can have contradicting and contrasting aspects. These include.
In times of crisis when quick decision-making is desired, I will use an authoritative management style. I will analyze all the available options and make a decision based on my own judgement.
When formulating my division’s strategy, I will use a consultative management style. This is to ensure that my team members have an input into our overall direction and this will motivate them to work harder and achieve the set objectives.
If my team members are seasoned professionals with extensive experience in their fields, I will use the laissez-faire management style. I will involve myself in their projects only if they need assistance on something but for the major part, I will let them do their work.
If my team consists of smart but inexperienced members, I will adopt a transformational management style. I will communicate the vision to my team members and avail the relevant resources. I will then monitor their progress on a regular basis and steer them towards their strengths while cautioning them against their weaknesses.
For matters that are not urgent and failure is not costly, I will adopt the democratic style of management. This is because the democratic style consumes a lot of time and using it for urgent matters can be detrimental. Furthermore, using it for high stake matters is not advisable because blame cannot be fairly apportioned in case something goes wrong (Khan et al. 2015).
If my division is involved in research and development of new innovative products or processes, I will adopt a collaborative management style. This is because employees are more creative when working closely with their fellow team members and where everyone’s input is considered (Ahmed et al. 2016).
