UAVs appear in diverse applications for leisure, academic, military, economic, and commercial purposes. The UAV industry has seen a surge in uptake over the last decade as a means of manufacturing, logistics, and delivering convergence, offering synergy and efficiency by integrating multiple technologies. However, new regulations for UAVs have increased their operational efficiency, thereby negatively impacting the industry. New Regulations Impacting the Use of UAVs New regulations in the use of Unmanned Aerial Systems have led to an increase in expenses due to a surge in compliance costs, including registration fees, upgraded standards in technology, and compulsory certificates. One of the main regulations for the recreational or commercial operation of UAVs is remote identification. According to the FAA (2024), remote identification is the ability of a UAV to provide ID and location information that needs to be received by other parties via a broadcast signal. The remote ID helps the FAA and other federal agencies to locate UAV operations. As a result, UAV operators must invest in compliant software and hardware upgrades. FAA (2024) shows that the remote ID, however, lays a foundation for the safety groundwork needed for complex UAV operations. Another new regulation negatively affecting the UAV industry is the expanded pilot certification requirement by law. Slater (2024) shows that commercial drone operators must pass the FAA’s (Federal Aviation Administration) Aeronautical Knowledge Test and acquire a Remote Pilot Certificate.
