The outbreak of covid-19 shifted the attention from the traditional working in an office. Due to Covid's infectious nature, most organizations and institutions embraced remote working to prevent their employees from contracting and spreading the virus. However, not all working class embraced this new trend. This present article investigates why some people prefer to work from the office rather than from home.
First, working from an office eliminates telecommuting: a prerequisite for remote working. Telecommuting negatively impacts employees' ability to handle the switch between daily personal life activities and work-related commitments (Palumbo, 2020).This confusion stems from the overlapping between private life and work, which considerably contaminates work responsibilities and personal concerns (Palumbo, 2020). Further, the writer warns that the hastened work-related fatigue associated with remote working leads to emotional and physical exhaustion, especially for home-based teleworkers. During the Covid-19 pandemic, when attention shifted to working from home, employees with an infant at home realized descending productivity levels, possibly due to the constant attention required by infants. According to Awada et al., (2021), the amount of time dedicated to infant care can distract remote workers, reducing their productivity. However, the writers observe that workers with a teenager had higher productivity. They attribute this trend to the fact that teenagers tend to be more independent and can help with household chores and care for their younger siblings permitting home workers to concentrate more on their tasks hence reducing disturbances. Also, the writers observed that remote workers with infants and toddlers spent relatively lesser time at their workstations than before the covid-19 pandemic. Working from home is unsuitable for mothers with infants and toddlers as they spend more time tending to them. Such mothers are more productive working from offices.
