Caffeine is a common stimulant worldwide that is naturally available in various plant-based food substances but chiefly in coffee, cocoa products, cola products, and tea. The history of caffeine traces back several years, whereby people have consumed it in various foods, drugs, and beverages. At optimal levels, caffeine has many health benefits, while at high doses contains some adverse side effects. This study discusses caffeine on various health benefits and hazards to cognitive purposes.
The most common advantageous psychoactive effect of caffeine on the body is increased alertness and improvement of arousal to various cognitive performances of the brain (Konishi et al. 2018). Although the mental stimulation of caffeine is short-term, it highly reduces the risk of judgment impairments and dementia later in life. Low to moderate levels of caffeine consumption improves cognition and offsets physical deterioration of sleep loss, (McLellan, Caldwell & Lieberman, 2016). More so, caffeine is very impactful in controlling some few critical and long-lasting neurological disorders like stroke, lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and so on. Correct doses of caffeine also highly improve a person’s mood and attentiveness. The other beauty with caffeine is that it has got meager abuse potential, and its modest fortifying effects assist in improving the desirability of many diets and beverages with tasty flavors and aromas. Caffeine is also highly adsorbent and quickly gets into the brain where, while taken in optimal levels, increases mental focus and concentration. Students who regularly consume caffeine are more attentive and focused.
Caffeine is also very beneficial in activities like actual driving, where drivers that regularly use caffeinated diets are not mostly disturbed by fatigue and sleepiness (Konishi et al. 2018). Caffeinated food and drinks also reduce tiredness of both the brain and the entire body, thereby increasing the psychological keenness. That cognitive impact of caffeine makes a person remain productive for long hours. An athlete who uses more caffeine is more resilient than those who do not consume. For example, a study conducted by Cappelletti et al. (2015) on several athletes showed that eighty-four percent of the runners who used caffeine before the exercises remained throughout the training compared to only sixteen percent of those who did not consume caffeine. Caffeine also increases the heartbeat that, in return, assists in opening airways and allows more oxygen into the blood. At optimal doses, caffeine is very effective in reducing anxiety, which is directly related to the cognitive function of the brain.
At high amounts, caffeine attracts some adverse intoxicating effects or disorders that may potentially endanger the individual’s quality of life. For instance, Cappellette et al. (2015) observe that people who consume caffeine frequently high amounts report various symptoms like anxiety, mood disorders, and other behavioral alterations. Such hazardous impacts pose severe problems in people's lives, especially those that are addictive to their use because they get intoxicated in the process of using this product. High intake of caffeine also plays a significant role in blocking the peripheral and central neural receptors that cause cognitive challenges, (McLellan, Caldwell & Lieberman, 2016).
