Cyberbullying is a system of harassment in the digital world, particularly in social media. It occurs especially among young people where the victim suffers a shameful situation. Addressing cyberbullying is critical because victims may develop depression, low self-esteem, or worst, commit suicide. Today, saying any negative things towards someone is just one click away, and thus people should think carefully about what to post or share online.
Among all social media platforms, Instagram reported the highest instances where about 42% of users experienced cyberbullying, followed by Facebook 24%, and thirdly by Snapchat 31% of cyberbullying cases (Djuraskovic, 2021). Its impact on the victims’ lives is highly critical to be resolved. A relevant study reveals that cyberbullying does not only correlate with emotional issues, but also is linked with physical, social, and mental complications (Nixon, 2014). If remains unresolved, those could lead to a complete mental breakdown or suicide. Such consequences show how bad cyberbullying is to the lives of people, especially the young ones.
According to Djuraskovic (2021), there are various reasons why cyberbullying happens. A person's physical appearance perhaps is the most common of all (Berne, Frisén, & Kling, 2014). Society, in general, makes prejudices through negative comments as regards one’s skin color, height, weight, clothing style, among many other characteristics. On another aspect, educational attainment is also a subject of cyberbullying. Specifically, those who did not finish schooling are perceived as less intelligent people, and therefore, incompetent to deserve better social and economic status (Popp, Peguero, Day, & Kahle, 2014).
In addressing this timely and critical social issue, social media organizations, together with concerned influential personalities can work together to overcome the evil of cyberbullying.
