Dyslexia is a learning disorder that affects the capability of one to read, write or even speak. This disorder is considered to be genetic since it runs in families. Thus, one is likely to have dyslexia if his or her parents or siblings have it. The disorder affects the way the brain processes reading and language. Tilanus, Segers, & Verhoeven (2016) observe that brain imaging studies have proven that there are differences between the brains of people with dyslexia and those without it. The dissimilarity occurs in the brain regions associated with reading skills. The skills include understanding sound representation in words and word recognition. Apart from the family history of dyslexia, another risk factor includes precipitate birth or low birth weight. Exposing the child to nicotine, drugs, or septicity before birth can also affect the brain development in the fetus which may lead to dyslexia. Another risk factor of the disorder is individual dissimilarities in the regions of the brain that facilitate reading.
