Effects of Reward and Punishment to Children Motivation
For centuries, rewards and punishments have been the best methods of instilling discipline in children. The plans have been working but with little effectiveness. The reasons for their success in the past era are the lower thinking requirement, unlike present days where creativity is the core for breathtaking performances. Rewards may be more effective than punishment but only to a few individuals, who in the long run, become used to the trophies and grows demotivated. Therefore, neither rewards nor punishment are proper motivation tools as rewards diminish work enjoyment and reduce creativity, while punishment develops defensiveness in children.
Rewards minimizes enjoyment and crumbles children motivation. Angela Duckworth (2016) divided motivation to external and internal, indicating that the latter derives from rewards and punishment and often ineffective. Rather than developing their skills, children become competitive to attain a particular award or evade punishment. Over time, their inner motivation decreases without which inner desire for achievement. Turgeon (2018) noted suggestions by psychologists to reduce using the external motivators because they reduce natural motivation. Eventually, children lose interest in an activity they once enjoyed. Therefore, neither rewards nor punishment in motivating enough for a child.
