Freud’s personality theory can help in understanding crime from a sociological point of view. For instance, Sigmund Freud explains human behavior due to interactions of three parts of the mind, namely; the superego, ego, and id. The superego governs one's social morals and rules; it is responsible for an individual's moral compass or conscience. According to Freud, the superego can prevent from committing crimes. The superego develops as the child learns about what their culture and traditions consider wrong or right. Therefore, people with a well-developed superego rarely commit crimes since their conscience instructs them to do the right thing.
Similarly, instinctual id and strong superego make one feel shame and guilt over their actions. People with developed superego and id accept the offenses they commit but rarely repeat them since their conscience prevents them from repeating the same mistakes.
