Coffee, one of the chief sources of caffeine, is an extensively consumed refreshment in the world. Researchers have time and again deliberated on the caffeine risks and health benefits to the human body. Cognition, an intricate concept that involves psychomotor functions, language, memory, perception, among others, is also affected by caffeine. The purpose of this paper is to determine if caffeine does affect cognitive functions.
To start with, caffeine has been known to affect mental performance and memory. Caffeine, with its well-known stimulating effects, intrigued the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to set out and carry out a series of studies to show how caffeine works to affect cognitive functions. The body looked into; caffeine vs. mental performance, attention, depression, and stress, the mood, among others. This research proved that caffeine improves mental performance through limiting depression, improving the mood, helping out with concentration, and increasing the general wellbeing and alertness. EFSA went on to further illustrate that ingesting 75mg of caffeine not only helps one to focus on the required stimuli but also sustains the attention for an extended period. The body, however, went ahead to warn that higher caffeine intakes do not guarantee higher mental performance, nor does it extend the effect than the standard limit.
