The personality of an individual can be defined as a set of distinct traits, behavioral patterns and attitudes that constitute one’s character. Similarly, it can be termed as the aggregate beliefs, thoughts and feelings with which one perceives the environment in which he/she lives. Mostly people have distinct personalities. However, in rare scenarios, people’s personalities may be alike. Personality disorders are situations in which one’s personality is termed to be deviant to the societal norms. While personality disorders may be a common phenomenon, is it possible for someone to lack a personality altogether? This essay thus analyzes the probability of one having no personality.
According to Barone, Hersen and Van Hasselt (2011), it is impossible to have no personality. Lacking a personality is equivalent to being lifeless or having no soul. A person’s personality is integral to their existence. It not only promotes social co-existence with other people and the environment but is also a contributory factor to good mental health i.e. a normal personality is the cornerstone of sound mental health. Barone, Hersen and Van Hasselt (2011) go ahead to reiterate that having no personality would infer that the individual has no emotional feelings, no behaviors and lacks traits which is logically impossible.
