Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that affects how a person thinks, perceives reality, expresses feelings and relates to others. People suffering from schizophrenia seem to have lost touch with reality, leaving them frightened and withdrawn. The mental disorder is a type psychosis that caused by abnormal functioning of neurotransmitters in the brain. It is characterized by either or both positive and negative symptoms. The positive symptoms are caused by excess neurotransmitter activity in the brain. They include: hallucinations, delusions, thought disorders and movement disorders. The negative symptoms are caused by reduced activity in the brain. These include: reduced feelings of pleasure in everyday life, reduced speaking, flat or reduced facial and vocal tone expression and difficulty beginning or sustaining activities (Lewis&Buchanan, 2015).
