Uppers Downers and All-Arounders
Chapter three focuses on the general classification of stimulants worldwide, from the strong stimulants like cocaine, diet pills, and the medication used to manage attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Weaker stimulants include khat, caffeine, and nicotine. There is another category of stimulant drug created called synthetic stimulants, but they are facing legal actions hindering their production. Examples of synthetic stimulants include those drugs sold as salt baths in the form of methamphetamine obtained from methcathinone. The chapter also covers the impacts of stimulant drugs on society (Martini et al., 2022). The chapter covers the social, financial, physical, and emotional effects of stimulant drugs in society. The last part of the chapter covers tobacco, including the history of smoking and the impact knowledge of tobacco on its addictive properties. The chapter also discusses the report on the consequences of smoking tobacco and secondhand smoke.
Stimulants are used as psychoactive drugs across the world. A report from the United States indicated that in the previous year, 1.4 million people used cocaine, and 1.15 million others used other stimulants like shots and snorted without medical reasons. 67.8 million Americans smoke cigarettes and 114 million who are above the age of 18 years used coffers in previous years. Some stimulants are obtained from the plants like khat and tobacco; others are synthesized in laboratories, including bath salt (Martini et al., 2022).
General Effects of Stimulants Drugs
Simulants increase chemical and electrical activities in the central and peripheral nervous systems. When taken in low doses, they increase the heartbeat rate, blood pressure, and respiration activities, reduce appetite, and boost energy. Stimulants can manipulate the brain’s chemicals and survival pathways. Stimulants, when taken for a long time, have withdrawal effects; they deplete the energy in the body. They force the body to produce energy chemicals and become depleted when overusing them (Hiscock et al., 2018).
