King David as a Representation of Judaism
Ancient Hebrews developed Judaism which is a monotheistic religion characterized by one omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient God who revealed Himself to the Hebrew prophets and scriptures. Israel is defined by its communal relationship with God and by their historic mission to reach the Promised Land.
King David, anointed by God, is perhaps one of the most prolific figures in Jewish history. He reigned over is Israel for 40 years and died when he was 70 years old in 837 BCE. David was a great warrior and was well liked by the Israelites. When his achievements and character are compared, his spiritual greatness outshines them all. When we read Psalms, King David desires most of all to have a strong relationship with God. The battles he fought, the numerous conquests were all done in the name of God. The Israelites were chosen by God and were therefore His hereditary bloodline is the only valid bloodline in the history of the Jews since King David was ordained by God.
In the conquest of Jerusalem, King David takes the throne and subdues the Egyptians, Assyrians and Philistines, thus freeing the Jews who occupied Israel from their oppressors making it the capital city of Israel. King David ends up buying the upper part of Mount Moriah from Aravnah in which the Jewish patriarchs recognize it for its incredible spiritual power. Mount Moriah is the site where Abraham went to offer Isaac as a sacrifice to God since he could feel God’s presence there. The Ark of the Covenant’s resting place was built at this site since it is a place where God’s presence can be felt more than any other place on this earth.
Jews Today and their Wait for the Messiah’s Return
The Messiah in Judaism is the savior and liberator of the Jewish people. Jewish theology states that the Messiah will be a Jewish king descended from King David’s hereditary line and would be anointed with holy anointing oil ruling the Jews in the world to come and during the Messianic Age. This belief is a basic and important part of traditional Judaism. Jews today await the Messianic Age since it is characterized by mending of the religious courts of justice, the righteous being rewarded with eternal life, the wicked being punished for their sins, reconstruction of Jerusalem, restoration of the line of David, rebuilding of Temple service and assemblage of exiles.
According to Jewish eschatology, the Mashiach will be well acquainted with the Jewish law and observant of the commandments provided in the Torah. The Messiah will also be a great military leader who will defeat Israel’s enemies in battle. Today, the Muslims want to take back Jerusalem since it is where the “Dome of the Rock” stands. With the coming of the Messiah, the Jews are hopeful that He would be able to save them from these insurgents. The Messianic Age will be distinguished by a peaceful coexistence of all people and wars, hatred and intolerance will cease to exist. Jews will return to their home, Israel, from exile and the law of the Jubilee will be reinstated.
It is during this time that the world would recognize Judaism as the only true religion and the Jewish God as the one true God. Sacrifices would be limited to thanksgiving offerings since there would be no more need for redemption offerings.
