Very many views exist on matters of religion. One of those common views is Sigmund Feud’s belief in religion, where he suggested that God is an illusion. He stated that human beings look for the help of a powerful figure when they have a sense of guilt. As a result, religion will be vital in absolving guilt. Thus, this paper will delve into the meaning of universal obsessional neurosis of humanity, look at the reason why Feud considered religion to be universal. Also, this paper will look at the reason why Feud considers religion to be neurotic.
The universal obsessional neurosis of humanity
The universal obsessional neurosis of humanity comes from the Oedipal complex, where a person has feelings of helplessness. As a result, human beings become more secure and have a sense of fulfillment from their religions. Feud believed that religion and neurosis are the creation of the mind of human beings because of their compulsive behavior of wanting to control the external world. Besides, human believes that there is a superior force in the universe and they have a great need for rectifying their shortcomings which may be causing pain. Because of this, human beings want to have the fulfillment of wishes and they need to feel that they are safe and secure. Religion absolves them from their own guilt. In this light, they chose to believe that there is a nature-father and a powerful being called God.
