The Asian Experience
The Asian Experience
The Asians did not have it easy before World War II in America. The Asians, mainly the Japanese and the Chinese, were subject to laws with numerous restrictions. The desire to get into America and gain citizenship was a bit of an uphill task. There was an open repelling of Asian immigrants by the American government due to the kind of laws they put in place. The Asian experience with immigration was rough up until World War II.
There were laws excluding the people of Asian descent from voting or even owning land. The Alien Land Law of 1913 passed by Congress made it clear on the stand of the government. A lot of people sought naturalization and become citizens of America, but it was not possible. Others who moved to America still felt like prisoners as they had to operate in specific areas, and there was no freedom to roam anywhere. The Chinese had a more challenging time than the Japanese since there was a restriction on anything that would lead to them becoming Americans. Laws were preventing the Japanese from taking their spouses and children to America as well. The laws against the Asian people were to limit the interaction and the power that the Asian people would possess in America (Irons, Peter & Masugi, 1986).
