Autistic Students Face Health and Social Inequalities (Essay Sample)

Instructions:

This task was about reviewing a report about social work and students with autism and the experience of the client as a teacher to students with autism. The report says that the three most important goals for teachers are: to model appropriate behavior, act as a facilitator of social interactions, and create an inclusive classroom environment. The following methods were presented: behavioral training techniques and student-teacher collaboration. The section about behavioral training techniques listed four steps to implementing them: 1) identify the challenging behavior, 2) set up a time for intervention with the student, 3) work towards decreasing the frequency of behaviors by launching a reinforcement system for desirable behaviors, 4) establish an individualized plan for reinforcing desirable consequences consistently. More often than not, social work with students with autism spectrum disorder tends to focus on the deficits and difficulties associated with autism rather than the strengths and abilities, which can lead to feelings of hopelessness and frustration for the student.

Autistic Students Face Health and Social Inequalities
Choosing a career is often influenced by daily experiences that one goes through. In most cases, people settle for a career that will best help them serve their interest in life. That is aligning one’s life purpose with necessary professional training. I, too, have had experiences that dictated my career choice and what I do every day. My professional and educational experiences prompted me to choose social work, mainly working with students with autism. Choosing social work was an intrinsic push to get out and help autistic individuals aged five to twenty-one years cope with challenges characterizing contemporary school contexts. More importantly, I focus on helping schools and society embrace autistic children. Autistic students face health and social inequalities, which could be resolved through structural and policy support to strengthen relationships with other students, an area I have great interest in.
My professional and organizational experience as a teacher in a school dealing with autistic students influenced my interest in working as a social worker. The long time I served as a student instructor was a great moment to witness the way autistic children are treated in schools. Developmental shortcomings of autistic students influence most discriminative practices against autistic learners. A realization that autistic students need more focused-help from professionals prompted me to try social work. I wanted to make a difference in the way autistic students are integrated into society, especially in schools. That is pushing for school policies and practices that harmoniously integrate autistic students to the rest of students. More importantly, I became determined to help students with autism build relationship with their peers and friends. Seeing autistic students being mishandled by people who lacked knowledge created my interest in social work in an effort to help communities and affected students form healthy relationships.
A decision to obtain graduate social work education at this time was to gain the necessary knowledge of helping children with autism integrate into various social contexts, more so schools. Graduate education in social work provides adequate knowledge of dealing with various cases of autism. More importantly, social work education provides the necessary psychological and mental preparedness for any case of developmental disorder in a child. I expect to be a fully-equipped graduate of social work by the end of my training. Reconciling autistic children with their family members in case of conflicts is one difficulty I anticipate. In that regard, I am organizing educational programs to teach society members ways of embracing autistic children instead of despising them. Graduate social work education will best prepare me to serve autistic children effectively.
