The Electoral College Should be abolished
For over a century, the American politics have been characterized as a “winner takes all” system that has the interests of many indicated by the vote of the few ADDIN CSL_CITATION { "citationItems" : [ { "id" : "ITEM-1", "itemData" : { "ISBN" : "9781634829342", "ISSN" : "00105899", "abstract" : "The article discusses the U.S. Electoral College system, established in 1787 as a compromise between election of the president by a vote in Congress and by a popular vote of qualified citizens. The system sought to reconcile and balance differing federal and state interests, give the state legislatures the authority to provide their means of choosing the electors and preserve the presidency as independent of Congress for election and reelection.", "author" : [ { "dropping-particle" : "", "family" : "Neale", "given" : "Thomas H", "non-dropping-particle" : "", "parse-names" : false, "suffix" : "" } ], "container-title" : "Congressional Digest", "id" : "ITEM-1", "issue" : "1", "issued" : { "date-parts" : [ [ "2017" ] ] }, "page" : "2-32", "title" : "How the Electoral College System Works.", "type" : "article-journal", "volume" : "96" }, "uris" : [ "http://www.mendeley.com/documents/?uuid=c8103a13-9cb2-4a69-b110-30b81d21aadf" ] } ], "mendeley" : { "formattedCitation" : "(Neale, 2017)", "plainTextFormattedCitation" : "(Neale, 2017)", "previouslyFormattedCitation" : "(Neale, 2017)" }, "properties" : { }, "schema" : "https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json" }(Neale, 2017). The Electoral College has been the center of all the problems related to the dissatisfactions and frustrations arising from the election outcomes especially in the executive and is not likely to be representing the interests of the millions. This paper is an argumentative essay on why I believe that the Electoral College should be abolished. The paper will focus on several key areas of electoral limitations that arise from the college and how abolishing the system can help solve them.
First, the Electoral College system of presidential election gives more focus on the votes of the Electoral College rather than those of the electorates all over the country. In essence, a government and its leaders should be elected into office and given the leadership mandate by the community. With the Electoral College, the voice of the majority regardless of their numbers is represented by a small group of people ADDIN CSL_CITATION { "citationItems" : [ { "id" : "ITEM-1", "itemData" : { "abstract" : "In examination of the constitutional and political institution of the Electoral College the research shows that throughout American politics and history the Electoral College always had and has a role of great political and historical influence. Furthermore the Electoral College has also been a source of much political and constitutional debate. This is an intriguing constitutional needle in a political hay stack for the simple fact that something appears to be insignificant and inconsequential until its time for the national presidential election to roll around every four years. Thus the Electoral College takes front and center of the national political stage as the collective national eyes are all on the presidential race and the ever so magical number of 270. How the Electoral College factors into American politics has been the subject of much political discussion relevant to how the president is elected, how the American public\u2019s voice is represented and how democratic of a political institution or representative system is the Electoral College. Through the sands of time of American history there has been camps of voices echoing concerns about the constitutional needle in a political hay stack of the Electoral College and its influential role in American politics.", "author" : [ { "dropping-particle" : "", "family" : "Cox", "given" : "Anna M.", "non-dropping-particle" : "", "parse-names" : false, "suffix" : "" } ], "container-title" : "International Journal of Social Science Studies", "id" : "ITEM-1", "issue" : "2", "issued" : { "date-parts" : [ [ "2018" ] ] }, "page" : "94-107", "title" : "The Electoral College: A Constitutional Needle in a Political Hay Stack", "type" : "article-journal", "volume" : "6" }, "uris" : [ "http://www.mendeley.com/documents/?uuid=b7362a3c-15f7-465b-8d09-9ed4e35a1280" ] } ], "mendeley" : { "formattedCitation" : "(Cox, 2018)", "plainTextFormattedCitation" : "(Cox, 2018)", "previouslyFormattedCitation" : "(Cox, 2018)" }, "properties" : { }, "schema" : "https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json" }(Cox, 2018). It is therefore likely that an election candidate will focus campaigns on the regions where the electoral votes are significant and leave the marginalized areas unattended. The results of such a system are the election of a government that does not appeal the majority but only a small section of the community which happens to have more Electoral College votes.
