The United States of America is a federal republic where the President, Congress and the Federal Courts have shared powers reserved to the national (federal) government as stipulated in the Constitution. The federal government shares its sovereignty with the state government.
The federal government is the national government of the United States of America. The federal government consists of three independent arms of government: The Executive, Legislature and the Judiciary.
The state government is the institutional unit of Federal government exercising some functions of government at a level below that of the federal government. Each state government holds executive, legislative and judicial authority over a specified territory.
The structure and responsibilities of the federal government are defined in the Constitution, while powers not granted to the federal government and not restricted by the Constitution are reserved to the state and the people, which are divided between state and local governments. Most Americans have more contact with state and local governments than with the Federal government; police departments, libraries and schools, driving licenses and parking tickets all fall under the state government.
