The Democratic Republic of Congo is largely considered a weak state because of multiple reasons which contribute to the prevailing conditions. Despite having some of the largest natural resource quantities in the world, the country is still considered among the poorest with people living on less than $500 a year (Sawyer et al., 2017). Additionally, the country’s government has very loose control over most of eastern Congo which has been overran by rebel groups. DRC is a weak state because democracy does not prevail, it is intensively impoverished and the government has very limited control over the provinces of Tanganyika, Maniema, South and North Kivu, and Ituri in the Eastern part of the country (Sawyer et al., 2017). As a result, rebel groups have dominated the region for decades and caused terror on residents while simultaneously exploiting natural resources at the country’s peril. Therefore, DRC is a weak state due to limited government control and the widespread disregard for law and order in the Eastern region.
DRC is the largest country in Sub-Sahara Africa which has made it incredibly difficult for its poorly equipped and poorly trained army to manage. The presence of natural resources, and interest from foreign nations have played a large part in destabilizing the nation (Sawyer et al., 2017).
