Sudhir Venkatesh is the author of the book titled” Gang leader for a day: A rogue sociologist takes to the streets”. Despite being the author, he is also the primary subject. His research journey begins a few days after a scholar sends him an offer to participate in research. The primary aim of the scholar is to understand particular neighborhood factors affecting the young blacks. Unlike his fellow students who decide to carry out their research from the library, Venkatesh decides to get into the field to interact with members of a gang his aim being to understand what takes place in the street. The book contains eight detailed chapters that contain different characters, including prostitutes, police, and members of a gang called “Black Knights” who assists Venkatesh with information, protection, advice and meals. It has several lessons for a qualitative researcher including the unique ethical issues found in qualitative research. More importantly, the book indicates the strengths and weaknesses of qualitative research.
