A genogram is a schematic model illustrating the structure and processes of a given family (Turabian, 2017). It goes beyond parent and child links to include the many complex elements that make up a family such as how members of a family relate and interact with each other. They, therefore, contain a lot of information about the family represented. The details in a genogram enable professionals such as counselors together with the clients to identify patterns in the family history. They are then able to determine how the factors might be influencing and leading patients to their current situation.
Genograms allow for flexibility during their creation depending on the intended final use of the resulting graphical representation.
