Harmful Effects of Caffeine on People’s Health
Coffee is one of the most consumed caffeine-containing beverages globally, which contains a combination of chemicals that are regarded as harmful to human health if consumed in higher amounts. Therefore, in excessive use, caffeine harms people’s health by leading to high blood pressure, insomnia, and addiction.
Epidemiological research has shown that excessive caffeine consumption can increase blood pressure by increasing the stiffness of the peripheral artery. According to the article, the compounds that lead to stiffness of the artery are kahweol and cafestol CITATION Hai17 \l 1033 (Wachamo, 2017). The two compounds promote the increase in the concentration of cholesterol in the human body. Further, caffeine can lead to the overproduction of adrenaline from the adrenal glands causing the blood pressure to increase. Also, excessive caffeine intake leads to general toxicity in the body, associated with increased anxiety. Research has shown that episodes of anxiety cause dramatic spikes in blood pressure. Although the spikes are temporary initially, with continued use of caffeine, the spikes cause damage to blood vessels, kidneys, and the heart and eventually the occurrence of high blood pressure.
