How cops can help citizens better understand police use of force?
The government needs to be able to trust that its police departments are using force in a constitutional manner, so it's important for citizens to understand what constitutes appropriate force. The first step in that process is that officers need to understand how to effectively educate the public about this issue (Paoline et al 2018). Because when police use force, it makes headlines and can lead to protests and violence. The way we see it, there are three fundamental aspects of police use of force: the law, best practices and communication.
During the past couple of years, we have seen a growing number of videos captured by citizens on their smartphones and police dash cameras that depict police using force. These videos frequently go viral, as well as result in protests, violence, national news coverage and in many cases, death threats to the officer involved (Mears et al 2017). Tensions are high between police and their communities, with both sides sometimes feeling misunderstood or unappreciated. I believe the best way to better understand use of force is for all citizens to take a class about it in college.
Citizens and police officers have similar rights and responsibilities. Civilians have the right to be free from harm and abuse, while police officers have the responsibility to protect the community they serve (Mears et al 2017). The police are given the power of arrest, but it is a power they must use responsibly. If an officer uses his or her power in a way that causes harm, then that officer may face charges for violating the victim's rights. However, as a police officer, you can help prevent this from happening by effectively communicating with citizens about their rights.
