Increasing Vulnerability of Kelp Forests Decline – The Role of Deterministic Factors Related to Human Interactions
Introduction
Kelp forests are broad submerged habitats characterized by large seaweeds that form shelter-like-structures over the ocean floor. Kelps are intensely hegemonizing and extensive life-form, with certain species ranging about tens of meters in length (Filbee-Dexter & Wernberg, 2018). They multiple extremely quick and produce a tremendous quantity of biomass, in this way, providing habitat, ecosystem, and nourishment to a colossal number of related species (Filbee-Dexter & Wernberg, 2018). The diversity of habitat offers an expansive scope of profitable socio-economic sustenance to humans (Bennett et al., 2016). However, kelp forests are declining worldwide, like a significant number of other marine environments, as they are under the immediate and indirect impacts of anthropogenic activities (Wernberg et al., 2018). The central idea is to conduct a cause-effect analysis of kelp forest decline, using the following argument. The kelp forests decline can be attributed to deterministic factors related to human interactions such as climate change, and overfishing and harvesting, which have an adverse impact on marine ecosystem and human socio-economic sustenance.
The following sections focus on the cause-effect of kelp forests decline by exploring: ocean warming climatic stressors, and fishing and direct kelp harvesting as factors, and ecological and human socio-economic sustenance vulnerability as its impacts. With a focus on subtidal laminarian kelps, the present analysis, aims to understand the human interaction factors that have led to the kelp decline in the marine ecosystem. The impacts are also discussed.
