Immigration is growing towards some countries like the United States, so it is necessary to facilitate adaptation of this population. What distinguishes immigrants is not the presence of conflict, but also the dangers associated with acculturation that increases the necessity for understanding, reconciliation, and commitment. To better understand the situation of immigrants, different theories were developed, such as segmented assimilation and the life model.
The life model seeks to maximize the integration between individuals, families, and immigrant groups to their environment. In the life model, the problems are caused by the stress of the transition, environmental pressures, and a personal process of poor adaptation (Piedra & Engstrom, 2009). This model works on new conceptual areas, such as the recognition of factors that influence vulnerability and oppression. In this sense, these vulnerability and oppression include poverty, crime, and environmental threats.
