Leadership and Communication
Leadership involves influencing others to combine efforts and achieve set objectives. Communication is a fundamental component of leadership. A leader communicates the vision, provides directives and engages employees to enhance their participation and encourage productivity in the organization. A leader uses various communication approaches based on the level of expertise of the employees. Also, communication is a two-way tool, where the leader listens to employees and provides the best plan based on the situation. This paper explores a personal example of an effective leader in the workplace.
I was an intern at a local capital-hedge fund. On any given day, business operations were hectic and increasing the chances of employees becoming frustrated and motivated. However, the company had an effective leader who was my boss’s boss, Mr. Ranford. Mr. Ranford was an effective leader who often switched between situational and participation leadership style based on the circumstances. His communication style was often guided by the level of expertise of employees and the timeliness of a project. For instance, while speaking to high-level employees, he listened more, encouraged participation and offer a practical solution. For low-level employees, Mr. Ranford used a coaching communication approach that enhanced our understanding and effectiveness in the firm.
