Everyone Loves Marineland?
Entertainment is arguably an essential aspect of human existence, especially today when busy schedules demand extra cultural activities. One activity involves the visitation of amusement parks filled with entertaining endeavors such as park rides, firework extravaganzas, and animal exploration. Marineland displays some of the world's most exciting animals, like the orca whale and beluga whales, for entertainment. Although exhibiting these animals sounds impressive, it presents a morally questionable circumstance regarding placing large animals in amusement parks for the public's enjoyment. This paper describes an argument regarding the morally unethical idea of putting large animals in amusement parks for the public's entertainment by exploring Marineland activities, a normative discussion regarding the unfairness of animal entertainment, and Bonnie Steinbock's remarks on animal cruelty.
Marineland Activities
Marineland is an amusement park in Canada that is well-fitted with family fun activities such as picnics, polar splashes, and entertainment from land and marine animals. Generally, the business involves providing entertainment to its customers. The company depends on large animals' presence to boost engagements and keep up with profitability. Marineland's goals include creating new attractions, facilitating entertainment events, and providing education to its customers regarding marine life care.
Marineland hosts numerous marine animals, including the bottlenose dolphins, orca whales, beluga whales, the grey and harbor seals, sea lions, and walrus. These animals display specific behaviors when not in captivity. Naturally, all the mentioned animals are highly social amongst themselves. The bottlenose dolphins display social hierarchy behaviors where they fight for dominance through biting and chasing activities. Orca whales engage in social ceremonies where they line up in opposite rows to greet each other. Beluga whales display vocal socialization and less aerial behaviors. The grey and harbor seals are highly exploratory, with grey seals showing fostering behavior by abandoning their pups to look after other young ones. The sea lions prefer packing closely and also sail together. Walruses also prefer to haul out in herds but only separate during mating seasons.
The conditions in which the mentioned animals are kept while in captivity at Marineland are somewhat imitations of their natural habitats.
