Multiple Challenges Befalling Black Americans
What is the article about?
Generally, the article presents multiple challenges befalling black Americans as they grow old. In addition to facing various social inequities for a long time, their old age is at high risk of poor health that is gradually declining, little and decreasing income, and little to no life savings. The author compares the health and financial status between African American people and their white counterparts. The numerical statistics presented are adopted from various surveys. The author then gives the underlying reasons behind the notable discrepancies explaining why the Black people are likely to have heightened health complications, low incomes, and savings. One reason acting as a risk factor to all these misfortunes is the social and economic limitations the African American people face throughout their lifetime in the country. Due to this, the author indicates that these people are highly dependent on social security as a source of income, hence, insufficient to maintain a whole life. Even though the author indicates some of the ways that can be changed to evade tough days in the future, he concludes by indicating that the social place of the African Americans and other minorities contribute to this situation. They belong to a place where funds are insufficient to cater for quality life and health care later in their old age (Brooks, 2021).
