National security is a vital obligation maintained by the governments of both large and small countries. In ancient times, countries established armies to prepare for conquest wars. Today, armies exist to counter both internal and external threats to a country's sovereignty regardless of its size. The international media is awash with news of large nations such as the United States, Russia, and China expanding their defense budgets. Still, little attention is paid to the armies of small countries like Costa Rica, Palestine, and Panama (Symansky, Bayoumi & Hewitt, 1993). Small countries need armies to counter aggression, work with other countries to counter-terrorism, and establish their supremacy at the global level.
Neighboring nations should establish armies to prevent territorial violations. The presence of an army promotes diplomatic resolution to disputes because it acts as a deterrence for a country to attack another. It is common for neighboring countries to have disagreements when they claim ownership of disputed airspaces, land, or seas (Selden, 2018). The differences may trigger military confrontations if one of the countries considers the other as weak. A larger state usually takes advantage of its military might to attack a small country that has an ill-equipped and disorganized army. Small countries should establish armies to overcome external aggressions from larger ones because of territorial disputes.
