Overcrowding of the Correctional Systems in the United States
The United States correctional systems are crowded. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the US prison population is approximately 2.3 million. About 481 individuals per 100,000 of the population are incarcerated in the US. The US criminal justice system has around 2.3 million people in 1,179 state prisons, 109 federal prisons, 1772 juvenile correctional facilities, 3163 local jails, and many more. Thus, overcrowding is for sure a severe problem that correctional systems across the US face today. The causes of overcrowding in the US correctional industries, its impacts, and possible solutions are discussed in detail.
The Causes of Overcrowding
The causes of overcrowding are many, and some researchers look back to the 1970s to pinpoint how the problem started. From the 1970s to the 1990s, the US government consistently pursued its war on drugs.
