Being moral according to Kant and Aristotle (Essay Sample)

Instructions:

Remember that a complete essay has both an expository section, and an evaluative section. It begins with a concise introduction that ends in a thesis statement, and the evaluative section of the paper defends the thesis and responds to a counterargument. 1. Why be moral? Kant, Hume, Mill and Aristotle offer different reasons for being moral. Explain and compare two of these different sets of reasons. Which, if either, do you find convincing, and why? In order to show that we have good reasons to be moral, must the reasons we offer be such as to convince a sensible knave? You can make use of texts associated with the primary texts (Velleman, Nussbaum, or any other text you found useful) when answering these questions. Being moral according to Kant and Aristotle
Introduction
According to Aristotle, morality refers to the differentiating of an intention, decision and action and coming up with a determination of what is good or bad and right or wrong. Morality is based on ethics. Aristotle explains that the moral code will relate to the systematic flow of proceedings that are expected to determine the best standards of operation in ensuring that all the members of the society live in a way that is the most admirable (Nussbaum, 2013). Kant illustrates that moral codes will relate to certain philosophies, religions and cultures. The determination of right or wrong will greatly be of use in ensuring that the rate of coming up with the right judgments is facilitated. Kant therefore advises that one should treat others just the way he would like them to treat him. I strongly believe that Aristotle’s explanation of morality should be considered in all life dimensions for the society members to live harmoniously.

Aristotle’s Ethics
Aristotle comes up with the idea that the moral standards of traditions, groups and individuals need to be followed in ensuring that most successful mode of living is facilitated. It is important to understand the common issues that make it possible for the different individuals to live in a manner that is of the greatest use to the different society members. Every different concept in the evaluation of what is good or wrong need to relate to the manner in which the different societies have believed to be for the common good (Nussbaum, 2013). Aristotle believes that any sensible knave will come up with an understanding of the expectations that are determined by the different concepts within the society. The manner in which the communities have always made their judgments regarding what is right or wrong is of a great consideration in coming up with a procedure that is to be adhered to by all the individuals who are considered to be members of a particular community.
Aristotle dictates that the need to understand the best procedures in realizing the most useful patterns of behavior need to be evaluated in the most professional way (Nussbaum, 2013). All the issues that need to be adjusted at any point in time come up with critical findings that are for the better of all the different participants in any socializing process. Aristotle’s ethics explanation is more convincing regarding the reasons for being moral.
Kant’s Evolution
Kant explains that socio-cultural evolution comes up with a finer understanding of the different issues that make it possible for the right behavioral attributes to be determined. Different important factors have made it possible for the sociological understanding to be adjusted in a number of aspects that are to be utilized in the different determination of the right or wrong within the society (Nussbaum, 2013). Kant is of the opinion that it is important for the sensible naïve to realize that the right and wrong judgment have been carried out o...
