Protests have been part of humankind since they first understood the meaning of rights and equality. They have been taking place for decades, each with their own reason that fuels them, or brought them to life. With this said, there are also various ways people have been known to protest with when they feel they have been wronged. Some match down the street shouting or singing slogans, some fight, some write books or articles, some write songs, while others refuse to show up to work. Even at home, children have been known to refuse to eat food in protest, probably of being denied the remote for the TV. Simply put, protests usually occur when a person or a group of people feel that they are being treated unjustly. This paper will take a brief look at protests in terms of music, and some of the effect it has.
Protest songs have been in existence for centuries, each bearing a certain effect on the people who listen to them (Way, 2016). In the US for instance, protest music has been used in times of social and political unrest where the listeners find a person who is bold enough to air their grievances, and the musicians find an outlet for their frustrations or feelings. These songs are usually written and sang as a means to rally up movements meant to achieve political or cultural change (Sander, 2018).
