Guns in Schools: Safe Learning Environments
The Stoneman Douglas High School shooting of February 14, 2018, is perhaps one of the most tragic occurrences historically. On this date, a gunman opened fire on students, staff, and other individuals within the school compound, and ended up killing seventeen people and injuring seventeen others (Phipps & Levin, 2018). Similar occurrences in the United States and across the world have led to the question as to whether guns should be allowed in schools to increase the safety of students and increase the chances of countering mass shooters in the event of an attack. Rather than improving security in schools, such a step will make learning environments unsafe; instead, increased access to mental health services, professional development for teachers and students, and substantive action against gun violence will improve safety in schools.
A week after the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, President Trump proposed and supported the idea of availing guns in to counter school violence. This proposal involved the arming of teachers and former military or trained officials working in school environments (Hansen, 2018).
