How Does Social Class Influence Peoples' Experience of Education
Social class shapes individual behavior and personality. Rubin et al. (2014) define social class as an individual, sociocultural background, which influences person’s preferences, attitude, and values. Social class is determined on the basis of measures such as parental financial status, education, occupation, and income. Besides, social class is associated with other demographic variables such as ethnicity, age, and social capital. Social class is a strong predictor of participation, retention, and performance in education in modern society. Most developed nations have expanded education and reduced financial burden associated with schooling in order to reduce the education gap between students from privileged and unprivileged families, but the effort had limited success. In particular, Australia reported a 30% growth of enrolment in the higher institutions from 2009 to 2015 (Czarnecki, 2018). However, the expansion has failed to improve equality in education due to the lack of similar access to education. The interest of higher social class dominates the education system, and thus, it does not meet the need of working-class students. Social class is a strong predictor of the access to higher education, institution attended, and educational outcomes due to differences in the access of capital and weaker incentives among working-class students. The paper examines how social class influences people’s access to education. First, the paper will focus on the impact of social class on access to education, and then the association between social class and the higher institution attended. Lastly, the paper will investigate how social class influences educational outcomes.
