The First Five Priority Areas to Develop as the Kenyan President
Kenya, being a lower middle-income economy faces a myriad of challenges that hamper its viable growth prospects. The country, located in the sub-Saharan Africa, ranks among the nations with unstable economies characterized by food insecurity, corruption, political instability, poor healthcare system, and endemic HIV infections. Kenya is endowed with adequate natural resources and favorable climate sufficient to spur a remarkable socio-economic growth but the vision has been a mirage due to poor leadership and misappropriation of resources. As Kenya’s president, my government resorts to undertake radical strategies to effect integral changes to the five key problem areas identified as the main impediments to cohesion and national development.

The country’s rapid population growth coupled with a low agricultural productivity increases its dependence on food imports. Over the past years, the nation’s food consumption has surpassed the agricultural output resulting in food insecurity and wide-spread hunger among the rural populations and the urban-slum dwellers (Welborn, 2018). The majority of Kenyans are subsistence farmers in rural areas and casual workers inhabiting slums in the country’s major cities. This demographic is greatly affected by the rampant food deficit that the government commits to eradicate.
To address the problem, the government plans an elaborate and extensive irrigation projects across the country to augment the rain-fed agriculture. The government additionally undertakes to provide inputs and technological support to the farmers in order to boost the yield. According to Welborn (2018), “Only about 2% of Kenya’s arable land is equipped for irrigation and the farmers struggle to gain access to adequate seeds, fertilizer, and other inputs” (p. 6). The over-reliance on rainfall coupled with the inadequate support to farmers has exacerbated the food deficit. The planned irrigation provides a remedy.
