“Privacy is a fundamental right that every human being entails without any form of restriction. It protects human dignity, and a foundation of other human rights is also built. Privacy gives us the assertiveness to scrutinize our ability to face a significant power imbalance when this fundamental right is violated. It allows us to be ourselves without anyone judging us and gives us control over who knows what about us. It enables one to think freely without discrimination” (Hartzog, 2021).
In this modern time, everything has changed, and this has been made possible with the advancement in technology and inventions that have changed human lives. With the creation of the surveillance camera, most people believe and assume that their privacy has been violated because people are watching their every move.
Suppose someone was given a case to examine, like in Nairobi, Kenya, on September 21, where three unmasked gunmen attacked the Westgate mall and caused half of the building to collapse due to an explosion, which resulted in a total of 71 deaths in Kenyan residential and non-residential victims (Kimotho & Narang’s, 2019). In this case, one would argue that even if the security camera were installed, people were injured and life was lost, so the surveillance camera is not sure for security camera, and it is a violation of people's privacy.
Even though surveillance cameras are good and a form of security, laws should be set aside to moderate how they are used in the public sector. These will ensure that no one's privacy is violated in public view. Not everyone would feel at ease in a place where they believe someone is watching them and everything they do (Doberstein et al 2022).
