For my essay, I chose the second ad. The advertisement is a photograph of an Asian woman covered in her mouth by a search bar. The search bar has the words “women should” and under it, a couple of suggestions to the suspended sentence. The ad is from UN women foundation, as indicated by their logo. The words “women should have the right to make their own decisions” clearly shows that the advertisement’s message is on women rights. The ad illustrates the point of view where women are mistreated and need to have a voice. Using physical attributes of the ad, words written on the ad, and branding of the ad, the message is promoted to the viewer effectively.
On the physical attributes technique, the ad speaks volumes at a glance. On the first glance, one can observe a distressed Asian female. A search bar has covered her mouth. The suggestions under the search bar are in bold. Analyzing this, one can depict that she seems to be in distress as she has been rendered voiceless by the search bar covering her mouth. A deeper analysis will show that society is the search bar and the Asian female is the everyday woman. Society renders women speechless by pressing hard on them. Society expects women to keep quiet and do as expected of them. Bolding words, in general, is used for emphasis. By bolding the suggestions, the ad shows that those are some of the things society expects from them. The physical attributes of the ad shed light on the fact that women are perceived second to men. The viewer upon looking at the ad should have empathy for the woman in distress. The covering on her face to the user should appeal a sense of truth and realization that that is what happens in society.
When one goes further into reading the words on the ad, specifically the suggestions under the search bar, a terrible feeling should grip the reader. With spiteful suggestions like “women should be slaves,” a disgusted feeling should come upon the reader. Analyzing this critically, one can depict the following. Since people in this era rely on the internet, the suggested words on the search bar show that indeed society views women in this context. Society stereotypes women to being cooks and despises them to a level of not speaking in church. Written under the search bar are the words “women should have the right to make their own decisions.” The formatting of the phrase shows that the words “have the right to make their own decisions” are a suggestion. This sentence hints that women should take a stand against this stereotypic view that denies them the freedom of decision-making, limiting them to a path decided by society.
The brand of the ad is UN WOMEN. Upon viewing this, the reader should automatically reca...
