Discussion Prompt #1 Student Name Institutional Affiliations Instructor Date Media bias is the perceived bias of journalists as well as new anchors in the selection of stories and events which are reported and the Manner such news are covered. Media propaganda is also prevalent in media as a kind of persuasion where information which is not entirely true is spread in order to further some sort of business, political or personal agenda through shaping public opinion. Classroom instruction focused on media literacy is meant to help students to take the facts and throw the fiction. My audience in this case is undergraduate students in a lecture class focused on women’s feminist study. The lesson that I could use to teach this audience to develop key analytical skills includes three key ideas as per Patterson, Howard and Kinloch (2016).[A. N. Patterson, A. Howard, and V. Kinloch, "Black feminism and critical media literacy: Moving from the margin to the center," Meridians 15, no. 1 (2016): 27, doi:10.2979/meridians.15.1.04.] The lesson should have the black women feminist students start by discussing the favorite TV shows, commercials and movies focusing on what they find appealing and thrilling as a way of getting in touch with media bias and propaganda. Students should share their insights in groups with recordings on how women are generally represented. Further I would solicit reflections on thinking in regard to media images in relation to women and more particularly black women. I would emphasize that learners should consider media images from a perspective of racial and gendered point of view. A few points of discussions would be important towards reinforcing understanding. The learners should discuss why it is difficult for people of different race to take the view of people from different identity markers such as gender, race and socioeconomic status. I would encourage open discussions of the things which black women should overlook and let go and which things are to be opposed.[A. N. Patterson, A. Howard, and V. Kinloch, "Black feminism, 15-18] Further, my lesson would introduce the concept of media literacy and note that learners must be able to think through subjects with criticality and efficiency. Here I will encourage discussion on media images focused on black women. In small groups, the learners should discuss education reconstruction, democracy and media literacy. After this I would let them learn the principles of critical media: mass communication and popular culture, relationships between media and information, politics of representation of race, class and gender etc. The principles of media literacy should be advanced more with ...
