My work is about the expressional dilemmas and poetics of responding and translating phenomena in my new environment via the expressive forms of Arabic Calligraphy. This idea initiated from viewing and encountering the ‘sea foam’ of the Indian Ocean for the first time on the shores of Australia. Arabic Calligraphy, with its nearly 14th century history, has been the most important form of artistic expression in Islamic culture. In contrast to the western societies and cultures, the great calligraphers were more famous than great painters and its practice was not only the affair of the particular craftsmen but also of many learned people, including sultans. A need to translate the scale and thoughts on this simple encounter is where my starting point is, as well as to produce a sculpture about Arabic calligraphy and perhaps things that are lost in translation.
