This response paper accentuates the history of modernist painting, according to Clement Greenberg. The article defines modernist as a period in the work of art, from the 1850s until his present-day when the tendency towards arts depicted a self-critical pattern. According to Green berg, Immanuel Kant was the typical modernist that ever existed because of his ability to devise approaches of the discipline, which could then be utilized to examine the discipline itself (Greenberg, and O'Brian 89). Greenberg credits Kant’s work because of his ability to formulate the limits of logic. The article maintains that the critical enthusiasm of the Enlightenment philosophical framework as the basis on which the modernist objective of self-criticism is built. Some of the fundamental aspects that painting must meet include examining itself to establish its intrinsic properties and must also have inherent properties that meet all the methodology of Enlightenment.
