POETICS BY ARISTOTLE
Introduction
Pity and fear are emotions which are aroused by misfortunes, which are not merited, or brought by the misfortunes of men. They are the main elements of a tragedy, which is generally an Imitation of actions which are serious, of a certain magnitude and complete. The tragedy is, therefore, a kind of drama that brings the emotions and feelings of pity and fear. It's mainly in the form of action, representing persons acting, who have qualities that are distinct in character and in thought, and spectacular equipment forms part of the tragedy. The success or the failure of the actions are dependent on the two qualities; character as well as the thought. A tragedy has six main parts; the plot, the character, diction, thought, song and spectacle. Poetry according to Aristotle is a form of an arm that aims at either representing or duplicating life. It imitates life by representing the character, actions, emotions or everyday objects.
A tragedy imitates action and life, where life consists of action and the end is also another action which is formed by incidents but does not represent quality, without action there can never be a tragedy. Quality of the men is determined by one's character, but their happiness or otherwise is determined by their actions. A tragedy captures incidents and events that tend to inspire either fear or pity, these events mainly come as a surprise, and its effect is emphasized when they follow as cause and effect. Tragedy, therefore, has either a healthful or a humanizing effect either on the reader or a spectator.
