There is no better way to define love of country than through the lenses of the Aboriginal Australians. Undeterred by dispossession of ancestral land and culture, enduring civil rights violation or institutionalised discrimination, the Aboriginals have devotedly contributed to the shaping of Australia as it is known today in so many ways the mainstream can choose to ignore but cannot obliterate. The imprints of this population are profoundly engraved in the country’s military, sports, politics, religion, education – the list is long; but, searching cursorily has promoted flubbing and ultimate lack of appreciation of the contributions. This text presents a reflection of the legacies of Aboriginals, and how history and culture impacted them. Despite experiencing numerous challenges varying in severity, Aboriginal Australians have never wavered in contributing to the prosperity of their motherland.
Amidst myriad challenges, Indigenous Australians have advanced significantly in controlling their future. Neville Bonne, senator for Queensland, 1971-1983, Kenneth Wyatt (2010), Linda Burney (2013), and Patrick Dodson (2016) became the first Aboriginals to represent their ilk in the political sphere to fight for better conditions (Australian Government Department of Health 2017). Moreover, over 400 Aboriginals participated in World War One as soldiers (2014). Archie Roach, a renowned Aboriginal songwriter and singer, also captured the heart of a nation following the release of “Took the Children Away” in 1990. The song narrates his ordeal as part of the Stolen Generation.
