Introduction
In this paper, design thinking can be described as the crucial disciple that utilizes the designer's sensibility and methods to couple with the fundamentals of technologically feasible and what a viable business strategy can change to a customer value or /and market opportunity (Martin, 2009, p10). This definition has a greater weight since it focuses or it narrows its grasp within the role of the design thinking in business. Nevertheless, scholars like (Lockwood, 2010, p4) reassessed this definition and modified it to so that it can cover a wider scope in the general society. Thus, their definition was that design thinking is a discipline or method that is used by designer’s sensibility so that they can understand the society’s problems how they are dealing with them.
Through this perception, design thinking is modified simple solutions that can be applied to more complex problems. From the business perception of these matters, it views it as a method that can be used to discover some of the unmet needs in the society and tries to match the people need. Through a through scrutinizing of this opportunity they are converted to be innovations that are market oriented, and to create opportunities (Dunne, 2006, p518). In a unique way, these scholars state that design thinking is like a machine that converts different needs into demands. Thus, in this light, these researchers make the assumption of the economic motivation of this concept.
This theory deduces that design thinking is an excellent approach to solving most of the problem through utilization of the emerging technologies. In particular, it is a significant application of principles for the greater good. That is to say, design thinking tries to improve the world we are living/designers are living in. This is achieved through breaking down of the problem to its roots and then building up a more concrete result after elimination of the unnecessary problems. The remaining challenges are then transformed into a more aesthetic product. Definition of Design Thinking
In this context, my definition of design thinking is defined simply as the methodology that is utilized by different designers so as they can solve complex problems, and also find an optimal/desirable solution to the customers. Thus, it can be seen as a way in which logical imaginations are used to explored possibilities of what could be. Thus, the design thinking is solution and action oriented and not problem oriented.
Literature of Design Thinking and Key Influencers
The design is a tool or work that is aimed at bringing something new and desired into existence. Therefore, it is a proactive approach that tackles problematic situations using design (Pahl, 2013, p70). Thus, these scholars state that the design thinking is a compound of routine that are adopted so as to solve complex dynamic situations. There are a number of characteristic that are used in distinguishing design thinking. The first characteristic is of finding simplicity in complexity cases. The second essential aspect is that of improving the quality of experience which is achieved through innovations. This is has been substantially achieved in the recent years through the adoption of the new ever growing technology (Brown, 2009, p14). The next very crucial essential or step is the creation of an elegant solution to the problem at hand. Lastly but not least, is the implementation process that entails the serving of the customer’s needs.
(Lockwood, 2010, p47), urges that design thinking can be applied in a business set up as a strategy for innovation. The scholars stipulate that when such designs are used or applied to strategy and innovation, there is a drastic increase in success of innovation. The foundation of design thinking is the effective strategy development as an organization and the organization change. Thus, the design is a broad scope that is applicable in the different business field (production, services, among others) so long as the field requires to optimize human interaction. The design is a helpful tool that can assign in leading, managing, creation and innovation. These strategies of problem solving can be summarized in the following model, which entail creative problem-solving modalities endowed with the principles and practices of art and design (Pahl, 2013, p75).
Innovation in agreement with (Drucker, 2014, p3), is a disciple that can be managed easily. This is because, if the approach to innovation takes the route like setting up practical and rigorous tools, framework and methods, then it will be easy. Thus, this makes the innovation as a byproduct of the design will be manageable.
Design thinking tries to inspire core elements of creativity, and most of the abilities to take a whole idea so that a concrete measure can be obtained. Some scholars like (Kimbell, 2011, p304) puts an argument forward that a unexecuted design is, as a worthless or useless proposition, and that execution an idea is as good as thinking. It is imperative to note that a big portion of design thinking revolves around empathy for the clients. This is seen after a chain of events, which tries to reveal how the ideas you are utilizing will be consumed. One of the main conclusions I some of the research is that it allows people to generate ideas or visualize those ideas in a real life situation.
Figure 2: Design thinking stages.
Notably, the design thinking is just like creativity and its event part are evolving. Design thinking is just as equivalent to several states as illustrated in figure 2 above. Within the stated firms. Nevertheless, (Vianna, 2013, p56), says that these steps are not linear, meaning that they can occur simultaneously, or they can be repeated.
Examples
Boot camp example
One of the key examples is portrayed from the Stanford University, which carries out the Design Thinking boot camp, with the theme of "from insight to innovation." Where it is carried at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design, which is affectionately referred to as "the d.school." This function is carried out for three consecutive days, and it is tailored by executives aiming at learning the concept of design thinking. This program is a human driven/centered, which main core is to drive forward the concept of innovation, which is vital in the product, services, and other business design.
Example 2:
Another example of real life design thinking is the design thinking lead by Perry Klebahn. This is a great scholar who even claims the fame of inventing the modern snow hole at Atlas Snowshoes and former CEO at Timbuk2. The Klebbahn and the d.school come into a consensus that if there was no implementation of the symmetric approach to improving the business situation. One of the dangers pending such an organization is that it is at risk of disruption or worse.
