There are various ways in which life as tool can help in motivation, through education there is the need for students from foreign countries to learn English as a second language. The most promising factor of all is the idea that English as a second language acts a bridge joining the education community to evolve and create a better environment for international students. Over the years there have been a concern on the increase rate of students applying for English as a second language because they want to fit into the academic culture. With different factors trying to establish the role of motivation on the students learning English as a second language while others grow to try and explain the chances of these students surviving in the business economy after their education.
Motivation is majorly a factor that helps in lifting the spirit, attitude, and hope of the student in achieving a goal. In such a case the students need to have a model that helps in reforming their accents and also assist them understand and recognize the importance of learning English. But before motivation there should be various factors to consider first is the attitude of the student towards the language, followed by their belief in improvement on the subject. Besides is the goals to achieve; they should be classified under short and long term goals. Also, the involvement of the students and teachers on the progress of learning English as a second subject (Mastoor , 2013). Last but not least is environmental support, and the students attribute towards the subject. Majorly motivation works in three distinctive ways; efforts, desire, and effects. To elaborate some students usually have the option to learn English as a second language majorly to get in college while other find the opportunity to get to socialize. There are theories trying to explain motivation concepts and scope to the world.
With these theories some of the ones targeting on the motivation of the students’ participation in English classes are Maslow’s Hierarchy of need theory. The law was established by Abraham Maslow when he was majorly trying to identify the keys of motivation to the students learning a second language. Through his theory he derived some major concepts that helps students achieve their goals in learning English and hoping for a better future. First he based his argument on the physiological needs; Education. Many people yawn to be educated or go abroad for better and further their studies. With that in mind they usually prepare themselves psychologically and physiologically to take English as a second language which is usually very motivating. With the kind of mind frame the student is ready to push him or herself to attain the required short and long-term goals of the course.
In addition, the theory goes ahead to introduce the safety needs. It is a very broad and challenging field because it involves the students need to improvement and also stress to attain the desired grades in their classes. Taking a second language like English is usually not an easy task but to maintain and enjoy the learning process the students must always be ready to go a mile ahead to attain the required goals of the school. To enable the students’ security on the language to prosper and attain good grade the teacher comes in hand to offer better training methods. These methods require repeated vocabulary and sentence function. The sentences construction is expected to be very perfecting covering all the grammar rules and regulations. There is also the need for the students to attend library sessions enabling them to be well advanced with their lesson plans and more prepared for future pros and cons on the subject.
Security mainly does not look on the academic level but the need for a successful future. After school the graduates expects to meet with the outside world and in order to secure jobs they need to be diverse on their languages hence English comes into play because it is diverse. There have been various cases where students tend to be active in the class that outside the room. The main reason is because of their comfort in class to express their feeling, ideas, and objectives openly since there is the presence of a lecturer to guide and correct them in case of a mistake. The need for social belonging is the third objective. Belonging means acceptance to the community and being able to speak English either in public and in educational institution acts as an identity. When one belongs to a community there is love, hope, and trust hence creating a conducive environment to flourish in learning English.
To finalizes Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs theory, the final section comes in terms with ego and esteem from the learners and their attitude towards learning. Having an ego is a powerful tool that makes various changes in once life. Example, students who have ego tend to obtain intrinsic motivation enabling them to achieve their short and long term goals. By achieving these goals, the students majorly have a shot of continuing learning the second language. Esteem comes into play in the case of short comings these students never give up and will always use the class room as the field of prosperity by engaging the teacher in various activities such as group discussion, debates, and outdoor conversations just to build on their language confidence.
Apart from Maslow’s theory another shocking but very interesting theory is Alderfer’s Hierarchy of motivation needs. The theory was designed by Clayton Alderfer, but to him motivation was all about three concepts. First it was all about growth; there are various of growing academically and financially. Growth being intrinsic make it a virtue because the students find themselves in a pool of wanting to get to learn and know more. With such desire the student is bound to get the attention from the teachers’ access to more reading materials from friends and families. Such students push themselves to understand, what, why, when, and how on the second language hence broadening their minds. With the help of the teachers they get the right direction when the teachers help them discover their true potential by advices them on which types of books to handle and read.
Furthermore, there is the need for relatedness and existence; it is a scope that looks on the social needs of the students and their need to coexist in the education community.
