Children are a source of joy and pride to their families. Parents beam with pride and joy seeing the children make little achievement as they grow up. However, for families raising children with Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND), the experience is a little different. Parents for such children face stigmatization. They go through a lot of mental stress trying to deal with the usual challenges of life, the disabilities of the children, and the stigma that comes with it from society. Holland, Pell and KIDS (2018) carried out a study that involved 240 groups of parents, randomly selected in the Hull and East Riding areas of the UK. The purpose of the study is to explore the effects of stigma on the caregivers of children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). It also intended to find out how it can lead to emotional distress and further social stigma.
